The self-stake a validator needs to receive X1 Foundation delegation is going up from 5,000 XNT to 20,000 XNT. The new floor goes live on Tuesday, October 27. It is the biggest single step since Project Capybara started tying the floor to P85, the 85th percentile of validator self-stake.

The announcement

Jack Levin, X1 Labs CEO, posted the change on October 19 in the X1 Validators chat of the X1 World group:

“Validators: minimum stake to receive formation delegation is moving to current P85 levels, please plan accordingly - changes will go in effect by next week”

Nick Pettas, X1 Labs core developer, then gave the details. The change goes live on Tuesday the 27th, and the current P85 will be rounded down to an even 20,000 XNT.

The rule applies to the Foundation delegation pool. Ripper Pool runs its own delegation and uses its own P85 as the cutoff.

What the numbers say

We read the Foundation delegation program’s public API at about 14:40 UTC on October 20, in epoch 416. It lists 488 validators. The 85th percentile of their self-stake is 22,427 XNT, so Pettas’ 20,000 is a round number just under the live figure. The median validator has 10,039 XNT of its own stake.

Self-stakeValidators at or above
5,000 XNT (current floor)460
10,000 XNT259
15,000 XNT153
20,000 XNT (new floor)112
25,000 XNT56

Today 457 validators receive Foundation delegation, 302.2 million XNT in total. 345 of them are below 20,000 XNT of self-stake. Together they hold 226.1 million XNT of delegation, about three quarters of the pool. If nothing changes before Tuesday, only 112 validators clear the new bar.

X1 has not said how the delegation released from validators below the line will be shared out. If the pool stays the same size, the same stake would be spread over far fewer validators, which means more delegation for each one that qualifies. That is our reading, not an announcement.

How the floor got here

WhenMinimum self-stake
Before Capybara2 XNT
Around April 20261,000 XNT
June 24, 20263,000 XNT
September 20265,000 XNT
October 27, 202620,000 XNT

The jump was coming. On the mainnet’s first birthday P85 already stood at 11,709.72 XNT, more than twice the floor, and we expected Capybara to follow it upward. Since then P85 has nearly doubled again.

A heated discussion

The announcement started a long discussion in the chat. Operators who run several nodes said they will have to consolidate into fewer, putting the self-stake they now spread across many machines into the ones they keep. Others worried that a higher bar pushes delegation into fewer hands and could make the network more centralized.

That worry deserves a look at the price. XNT trades at about $0.175, so 20,000 XNT is worth roughly $3,500. That is a modest stake for a business that already pays a monthly server bill, and far below what it takes to run a competitive validator on most proof-of-stake networks. The bar looks high in XNT because the token is cheap, not because the commitment is large in dollars.

The validator set is not finished growing

X1 is still early in its reach. GeckoTerminal added the network on October 2, but CoinGecko, CoinMarketCap, DEX Screener and centralized exchanges have yet to list XNT. Each of those listings brings new eyes, new holders and new operators. The chance of new validators joining is still high, and a self-stake floor in the low thousands of dollars does not keep them out.

The stake that has not moved yet

The first investor unlock arrived on October 6, at the end of the 12-month cliff in the X1 Labs vesting schedule. Since then there has been no major movement in stake. That suggests the big investors have not claimed their tokens yet, and have not delegated them either. Community delegation across the whole network adds up to only about 1.07 million XNT today.

That stake is still waiting on the sidelines. A single delegation from a large investor could lift a validator from the bottom of the list to the top. The validators who look like the best home for that XNT are the ones most likely to get it.

A busy few weeks

  • October 27: the 20,000 XNT Foundation delegation floor goes live.
  • November 1: the Bootstrap Bonus ends, with the airdrop to follow shortly after.
  • November 6: the first of the 36 monthly vesting releases is due under the schedule.

Time to stand out

With the floor at 20,000 XNT, clearing it is no longer what sets a validator apart. Stake from investors and holders will go to operators who give it a reason: a fair commission, steady uptime and a low skip rate, a public identity, clear communication and something they add to the community. This is the moment for validators to start differentiating themselves.

Operators can check where they stand on the official delegation dashboard. Our delegation program guide explains the other criteria, and the X1 validators page tracks the network.
